Ellstrom: Family

Move over Earnhardts and make way for the Ellstroms. Talk about your racing family dynasties; you need merely check out the team to see the extent this family is involved in Unlimited Class Hydroplane racing. From father to sons to grandsons, granddaughters to grand-nieces and nephews, they all have Hydroplane racing in their blood.

The patriarch of the team, often referred to as “The Boss,” is Sven Ellstrom. Sven, a native of Sweden immigrated to Ballard, Washington (Seattle) and has built his manufacturing empire there from the ground up, servicing the Aerospace, Marine and Building industries with equipment and products known for quality and performance. Many of these products were invented and/or improved by Sven and his company. Sven caught the boat-racing bug and over the years imparted that passion to his sons, who in turn have passed their enthusiasm to their children.

The Ellstrom family’s first venture into Unlimited Hydroplane Racing was sponsoring the radically designed 4-point Hydroplane built by Glen Davis. During an early morning test run on SEAFAIR Sunday 1994 in Seattle, the boat literally took off and flew across Lake Washington about 100 yards before crash landing.

Brothers Tom and Erick Ellstrom decided to take matters into their own hands and built their own hull for the 1995 season. Utilizing CAD technology and CNC machines from Ellstrom Manufacturing, their family business, the new “Miss E-Lam Plus,” named for an Ellstrom product, was a refined extension of established “Unlimited Class” Hydroplane designs.

Over the years, the Ellstroms tested and improved their overall designs for the hull and the engines and the Miss E-Lam Plus began to win races. The 1999 season saw continued improvements with their Hydroplane and the equipment. The Ellstroms were named the Ultimate Hydroplane Racing Association’s (UHRA) “Owners of the Year.”

In later years, the U-16, Miss E-Lam Plus began to truly give the top contender, “Miss Budweiser,” a run for her money. Outspending over ten dollars to every one spent by the Ellstroms, the Miss Budweiser Team was tough to beat. However, the Miss E-Lam Plus often entered the winner’s circle with 1st through 3rd place showings and winning a number of UHRA Cups.

And now with the 2004 season being Miss Budweiser’s last, the U-16 is poised in 2004 and beyond to dominate the HydroProp circuit with a top crew, time-tested equipment and spectacular performance. The U-16 will consistently deliver sponsor’s image and logo both locally and nationally and into the winner’s circle.
